I have been trying to find Sessions paintings to purchase. I own one of his paintings and I would like to have more. My son is his great-grandson and he has taken interest in art. Although my son is a cartoonist, I would like to expose him more to his great-grandfathers work. If anyone knows of an exhibit of his work I would love the opportunity to take my son to see it. We live in New York. Thanks for your help.

I can't say that the Vermont farm title is a familiar painting of James Sessons. He often painted boats and water scenes as well as war scenes. I'm sorry that I can't help you out.
Recently found a Sessions watercolor at an antique store of fishing boats. My friend has a winter scene and has found that some of his later works were of landscapes. Rockport area works are his early paintings. Can you tell us where he lived etc? Very interested in his work and that of Santoro- another watercolorist from the Rockport Art Association.
I have located a work by "Sessions" at an antique store also. I'm interested in determining the value of this work. It's fabulous. Please reply.

In reply to the inquiry by Don, I have a watercolor described by him that he believes is called Vermont Farm. My father was a restorer and art dealer in NYC and Newport, RI. The painting was in my family's home for probably about 35 years. It appears to be an original watercolor, but I am no expert and have no way of knowing if it is the real thing. Anybody know anything about this picture or how I might authenticate the painting?
I have the same one and think it may be an original. Judging by the paper, it looks like a watercolor. I can take a digital photo. If you would like to see it, please reply in this discussion.
Would like to hear from you. I recently saw your letter. I'vw have A book of 24 watercolor paintings by James M. Sessions. The 11 x 14 book depicts W. W. II Land & Naval battles. They are very colorful. The book is a hard cover, limited edition of 1000 copies. It is in excellent condition and was printed in 1947.
The book was sponsered by Turner Tubes, a defense contractor of that time known for their critical machine work & design. I have no idea what the book is worth.
When I saw your letter I decided To look for an auction house that may specilize on this artist.

Here's a Sessions story for you.
When my father was about 12 years old (he was born in 1925), he mowed a yard of a family in southern Michigan. After mowing, the owner would invite him in for cookies and milk. It was there that my father would admire a watercolor painting of ships in a harbor. My father loved art and loved that painting especially. Now, forward to approximately the year 1979. There is an auction at the old folks home where my father had once mowed grass. My dad couldn't leave his one-man barbering business to go to the auction so he sent a friend/customer to go in his stead. My dad didn't know if the picture still existed but described it to his friend and told him not to spend more than $20 if it was up for bid. A few hours later the man came back and said, "I had to pay $25 but I hope this is the one". He turned the picture around for my dad to see and sure enough it was the same picture he'd remembered so fondly as a child. After taking the picture home, my dad took the frame apart to find Mr. Sessions signature painted with water colors on the back. My dad was a wonderful artist but the story behind this painting makes it as valuable to us as the things he himself painted and carved. We have no idea what this original painting might be worth but to us it's worth a million… and when we look at it we imagine a sweaty 12 year-old wishing he could paint that well someday.

Tag says "A De'colage original" by Specialty Art Of California. Tag looks old, like something from 30's or 40's.
I do not know if it is an original, or a fake. It looks like a watercolor with a unique technique sort of like an oil painting. Really vivid colors, looks real to me.

Thanks for the response. I do know that James Sessions did paint a lot of fishing/sail boats but I don't recall the Herring boat title. As much as I would love to own all of my childrens grandfathers paintings, I don't know how to make that a possibility with the one you own. Where are you located? There is still the question of the painting be real or not. I welcome your suggestions. Thanks!

My Father was a personal friend of your son's Great Grand Father, James Sessions. My Father, Richard Schwartz Sr. was also an artist and met Mr. Sessions while working at Brudno Art Supplies on State Street in Chicago. My Dad admired Mr. Sessions and developed a friendship. As you may know, Mr. Sessions was hired by The Chicago Tribune in the late 1930's to go overseas to Europe and paint on location pictorial documentations of what was the beginning of World War II. The result was Mr. Sessions work was the first featured color spreads ever printed in the Chicago Tribune. I own one of those paintings. The subject is Nazi's arresting Women and Children.
My Dad died when I was 12 in 1979. I followed in his foot steps and graduated from The American Academy of Art in Chicago. I studied watercolor painting with the late Irving Shapiro, AWS. While attending school, Mr. Shapiro took the other students and myself to The Art Institute of Chicago. There is a special room there called, The Print and Drawing Room. There are several original James Sessions Water Colors in files there. They are not viewable by the normal public. I am certain that if you contact the Art Institute of Chicago. Whomever is in Charge of The Print and drawing room at this time should be honored to show you his paintings.
Brudno Art Supplies in Chicago is still there on State Street, but is not the great art store it once was. Until 1998, it had original paintings hanging by Sessions. The former Owner Jackie Roach died, what ever became of the original art work is beyond me.
If you decide to come to Chicago, I would be happy to go to The art Institute with you and make sure that the print and drawing room cooperates with you. I know a few people there and May be able to pull some strings.

I have an Irving Shapiro painting,:Rushing Waters" mounted professinaly in a very nice frame. It is approximately 22" x 36". I would like to sell it but haven't established the value yet. I am open to offers.
I puchased a print of a harbor scene signed "Sessions". I have not seen this scene on any website. It shows a sailboat, with the headsail down and hanging over the bow. The boat is docked next to a building and other boats and buildings are shown on the bay. I would like to learn more about the artist and this print.
